Nepal government established Regional Veterinary Laboratories to strengthen the animal health system and improve the quality of veterinary diagnostic services delivery in each of the 5 development regions of Nepal. This laboratory was one of such laboratory established in the Eastern Development Region of the-then regional administrative structure of Nepal.
Veterinary Laboratory (VL), Biratnagar is the regional laboratory situated in Biratnagar Metropolitan city-13, Morang, Province-1. The institutional framework of this laboratory was established in the Fiscal year 2045/2046 BS (1988/1989 AD) but the laboratory was not functioning properly to meet the objectives due to the lack of adequate manpower, necessary equipment and frequent changes in the organizational structure. From FY 2048/2049, the laboratory had its separate identity as Regional Veterinary Laboratory (RVL) with specific roles, objectives, manpower, logistics and financial support. The scope of the area of the RVL were all the 16 districts of the-then administrative structure of Eastern Development Region.
After the reformation of the Nepal in federalism, Nepal was administratively divided into 7 provinces, 77 districts and 753 local level. This laboratory, although a laboratory under federal government under Central Veterinary Labotaory, is working as a province reference laboratory in Province-. The scope of work area is all 14 districts of province 1. Additionally, the laboratory is still providing services to the 2 districts of Province-2 (namely Saptari and Siraha). The laboratory is providing laboratory diagnostic services to the individual farmers who visit the laboratory as well as institutional laboratory services to the veterinary and livestock organizations of the provincial and local government in Province-1. The laboratory is providing different laboratory diagnostic services, support in disease diagnostic and disease investigation, involvement in disease outbreak events and other technical veterinary clinical and laboratory services.
